Mare and Foal WIP (Work in Progress)

I have been working quite a bit in the studio lately. I found myself tending to the business side of being an artist and neglecting my painting time!

I broke out the watercolors and started laying down the initial glazes of this painting of a mare and foal. My reference picture has brilliant azaleas behind the horses and it is such a feast for the eyes in color. The paper is a bit large for my scanner so I apologize for the unintentional crop job! This measures 11 x 14 , M Graham Watercolors (my favorite) n 140 lb Arches Hot Press paper. As always comments welcome!

Gypsy Vanner ~ Almost Finished!

I am out of the ugly stage with this painting. It is taking me a bit longer than usual to get this done because I needed to get my Glory of Horses panel done. I spent a few hours on this today and now I have reached the point where I look at it for a few days and see where it needs to be tweaked. I do apologize for the awful photo! The flash has washed out the color in the mane and tail. Comments welcome!

I am having fun with this one. Changing things around playing with the background and sky. I hope to have this completed this evening. I do apologize for the glare!

Glory of Horses Panel

It was quite scary laying down the paint and trying not to obscure the main lines and colors that are part of the original panel. I painted very loosely. If you scroll down you can see the panel that I had to work with. I am pretty happy with this. I will look at it for the next couple of days to see if there is anything that needs tweaking. Then it will be varnished and off it goes. I was very nervous starting this one! But doing the happy dance now that it is just about completed!

I have "found" the painting in my Glory of Horses panel. I saw it as soon as I opened up the box. Here I have lightly sketched it onto the panel. Hopefully, you can see it.. The "Glory Of Horses" will be then go on display at the Kentucky Derby Museum, at Churchill Downs from about April 24 through about May 11, 2008!! The "Kentucky Derby" is May 3, 2008! Gypsy Vanner Coming along!

Here is the latest installment of the Gypsy Vanner Horse. I am working at reinstating a moody feel to the piece. I have laid in a darks for the stormy sky and needed to wait for it to dry. I work with M Graham acrylics and they really handle a lot like oils with a very long open time so when I am glazing I need to let them dry between layers. I really LOVE these paints! You can click on the image for am enlarged view!

Daily Riding Essentials

My newest painting for my daily painting is titled "Polos". I do one of these little paintings a day. You will find really fun painting sketches from my Horse Painting a Day Collection. This collection is titled Riding Essentials because you will find sketches of all the different supplies, sundries and equipment used in the daily care and training of a horse. You may find a feed scoop, a folded cooler, a pile of polos, etc.....
Key here is that I produce one of these paintings a day! How do I choose what to paint? Easy... I reach into my tack trunk and pull something out!

You've got to love acrylics!

I have been trying to decide how to save this painting. It started out with a rider and green,tree-ed background. And it just bugged me! I kept reworking the rider and it got worse. I do need to have a huge sign over my eisel that says..Stop Me Before I Kill Again!....I need to get out of the trap of overworking stuff. Anyway, inspiration struck and I decided to obliterate the little man and completely remove him from the painting. So here is where we are now and I am really liking it. There is still more to do but you can get the idea. I apologize for the glare but I had to use the flash. The previous version is down below on this blog. I am thinking of titling it -Dancing in the Moonlight. But..I am open to suggestions! Feel free to offer title suggestions below! Happy Holidays!

Polo Painting WIP

Update #2
Painting on the right is WIP (Work in Progress) number two.I have gotten some more work done on this painting. I am pleased with how it is coming along. I have a few more hours to go before I call this one finished. Sorry about the glare..this one is too big to fit on the scanner so I had to use the digital camara. I'll be needing a name for this one so suggestions are welcome!

Laying a bit low as I go through round two with Lyme disease. But I did manage to get some painting done on this. I am trying to keep it real loose with lots of brushstrokes. Sorry about the glare from the flash. This is acrylic on canvas board and measures 16 x 24. Feel free to post your comments. Oh, I forgot to mention, if you click on any image it will enlarge in a separate window.

Going large!

As promised, here is the WIP (Work In Progress) Of my latest watercolor. This is a large painting and measures 24 x 25, watercolor on Arches HP. I have been getting many requests for large prints and ,unfortunately, my paintings Collection, Connection and Harmony measure 11 x 14. Enlarging them for prints would reduce the quality of the print. I have a few hours to go on this-
I am hoping to have large giclee prints available of this latest painting by November. Please, join my mailing list(link on sidebar) to be notified of availability! I am thrilled that so many of you enjoy my work so much!

ShowJumper

I have another almost completed painting. A few small details I need to add. This one is of a showjumper. I kept it loose and colorful. I wanted to capture that feelingg of flying and freedom when you jump a big fence. And I love the beautiful light that reflected off this chestnut gelding. I photographed this outside so there is a bit of glare on the painting.

The painting is acrylic on gallery wrapped, 18 x 24 canvas.
Available for sale!
